Raidraig braves the shave for charity

GOOD CAUSE: The Manchester Central team

RORY ‘Raidraig’ Curran, a freelance journalist covering Step 7 side Manchester Central FC, has ‘Braved the Shave’ in support of Macmillan Cancer Support – and raised over £5,000 in the process.

Raidraig, famed across the Manchester League during his University days for his screaming live-commentary from the sidelines, has smashed his initial fundraising goal of £1,500 target – but insists he is not finished yet.

Having moved back to his hometown of Slough, Berks, after graduating, Rory is now consigned to writing articles for the club from afar with only the occasional visit to the north-west. However, he remains a key cog in the Central media machine.

Today, Rory spends his days behind the bar, working with four close friends to keep punters at The Corner House in pleased – although he’s also toiling away to grow a moustache for Movember, raising money for Men’s mental health.

After a visit to Plymouth, where they witnessed others undertaking the challenge, Rory and his comrades were inspired to undertake the challenge themselves. With the NHS stating that one in two people will develop cancer at some point, Rory saw ‘Braving the Shave’ as “a good laugh and a good cause”.

Upon their return to Windsor, the group kept true to their word, starting a Just Giving page with targets to reach for each to embrace baldness. When the donations hit £400, it was Rory’s turn.

Photographer Sophie Balchin was there to document every moment of the razor blessing Raidraig’s dome – capturing a magnificent array of photos which documented every moment from the look of apprehension as the first follicles were fouled, to the glee with which an egg was mischievously smashed over a freshly polished skull.

Not only has the group seen support from friends and family but they have also been shared all over the north-west football scene with Central’s article retweeted by the likes of the Manchester Football League and the Manchester FA.

If you would like to help Rory to reach his next goal of £10,000 in support of Macmillan – acharity which provides a wide range of services for the three million people in the UK who are currently living with cancer – please head to ‘Raidraig’s Brave The Shave – Corner House Edition’ Just Giving page.

You can also show your support for Rory’s Movember by donating to ‘Team Corner’.
