Archie White continued his fine season with a goal as Chesterfield progressed to the quarter-finals.
The cup fixture was a welcome break from league action for two teams placed near the bottom of the NLFA North Division.
Both sides came into the game following wins - against Notts County and AFC Fylde respectively.
In the first round of the cup, Chesterfield beat Guiseley 2-0 while Gateshead received a bye.
