Watching the vans
In aqua blue, Hebburn shirts shimmered, softly,
under pale skies, sponged with grey, and players shunted, punted, ricochet,
bounce, in play, like bagatelle balls bouncing off walls. Thinking of coffee,
chewing a toffee, the game too plain, watching the vans in the streets.
As lights flickered players bickered squabbling, falls and squalls.
Oh Sweet surprise, a through pass for Grantham, the Hebburn keeper
rising steeper, the ball smothered, like a kitten playing with wool.
