Dunston count the cost of hearse damage

have launched a crowd-funder to help repair damage to their pitch and side barriers after two cars were driven onto the pitch at halftime of Friday night’s friendly with leading to the game being abandoned.

Stunned supporters watched on as a hearse and a Subaru were driven around in circles in the centre of the pitch.

Two men wearing balaclavas – armed with weapons according to some sources – got out of the hearse, which was left abandoned, and exited the ground in the other vehicle, crashing through a gate as they went.

Leaflets detailing personal allegations against two individuals were also thrown from the vehicles’ windows.

The game, 1-1 at the time, was immediately called off and the ground evacuated with nobody hurt.

Police have launched an investigation and warned against social media speculation.

A Dunston statement said: “We are all deeply saddened at the events that took place last night. Thankfully nobody was physically hurt or injured.

“The club would like to put on record that one individual named on the leaflets distributed during the pitch invasion has had no connection with Dunston UTS, in any official capacity, for over two years. The other individual has no connection with our club.

“We stress, we are a family orientated community club and apologise for any distress felt by our supporters and visitors, particularly the younger fans.

“We will be working as hard as ever to repair the damage caused to our pitch and perimeter fencing and look forward to the forthcoming season.

“At this point, as it is a live investigation, the club will be making no further comments.”

Northumbria Police said: “It is believed those involved are known to each other and there was no wider risk to the public.”

A crowdfunder has raised nearly £1,000 to help the club repair the damage.  It can be found here.
