CLUBS, players and supporters have united in grief for ‘terrific’ young footballer Ross Aikenhead following his sudden death this week.

The 24-year-old, who turned out for side Winsford United, was described as a ‘”fantastic young man” and one of the ‘nicest lads on and off the pitch’ by friends and teammates.

“It is with deep sadness that we have to announce that our player Ross Aikenhead has sadly passed away,” Winsford said in a statement. “Ross was a fantastic young man and a terrific footballer. He will be sorely missed by everyone associated with the club, our heartfelt sympathy goes out to all of Ross’s family and friends.”

Ross’ father John Aikenhead later revealed in a statement that his son’s death was caused by the epilepsy he had suffered.

His family were in attendance for Winsford’s game against Ashville on Thursday night where they were presented with Ross’ number ten shirt.

Winsford won the game 4-0 – their first under interim manager Josh Hine following the resignation of Lee Duckworth last week – in front of over 300 fans who paid their respects.

John said: “He was a beautiful boy with an infectious smile. “It is my mission to carry him in my heart and smile, not cry, when I think of him.

“I have never seen him so happy as he has been lately. He was living the best life and was destined for better things.

“I will always be grateful for the way Winsford welcomed him and helped him flourish.

“I watched him grow as a footballer, a leader and a man. They helped him find his confidence and his voice.”

One of Ross’ former clubs, , who he played for in the early part of the season, were one of a number of clubs in the region to hold a minute’s applause in his memory ahead of their derby game with Wythenshawe FC on Bank Holiday Monday.

The North West Counties League said via their website: “We are deeply saddened to hear of Ross’s passing and we wish to send our sincere condolences to his family, friends and all at Winsford United.”
