MIDFIELDER Rob Evans has been named captain of his hometown club Wrexham by new manager Dean Keates.
Keates, who was named the successor to Gary Mills last week, had to appoint a new captain following Sean Newton’s loan move to York City.
Left-back Newton has reunited with ex-boss Mills at Bootham Crescent, signing until 4 January 2017, with a view to a permanent transfer.
Keates, who skippered his hometown side Walsall, didn’t delay in naming his new captain and has picked fans’ favourite Evans to wear the armband.
The 21-year-old has made just over 100 appearances for the Dragons since his debut against fellow Welsh club Newport County in April 2012.
Evans was captain in the recent 2-1 win over Bromley but he missed the draws with Barrow and Gateshead through injury. Mark Carrington has been named vice-captain.
On being given the news, Evans tweeted: “Honoured and privileged to be named captain for Wrexham AFC.”
