WESTFIELDS pulled off one of the best FA Cup comebacks ever last night to make it through to the FA Cup first round qualifying.
The Hereford-based club were 4-0 down at half time to higher division Kidsgrove Athletic following their 1-1 draw last Saturday.
Even the most optimistic Westfields fan would have been fearing the worst but, after first half Kidsgrove goals from Ross Davidson, Andy Kinsey and an Anthony Malbon double, the Midland League Premier side fought back.
Jamie Cuss and Matt Reeve made the tie interesting and then Westfields forward Craig Jones stole the show.
After netting a 79th minute penalty, he equalised in the 87th minute to stun Evo-Stik NPL Division One South Kidsgrove and seemingly take the game to extra time.
Kinsey struck again for the hosts in the 93rd minute to make it 5-4 and it looked as if Westfields were heading for the FA Cup exit despite their best efforts. Think again.
Jones’ free-kick in the fifth minute of stoppage time meant an extra 30 minutes and he left it late yet again – dispatching a penalty in the 120th minute to avoid spot kicks!
The miraculous 6-5 win means Westfields will travel to Step 3 club Barwell next Saturday in the first round qualifying.
