MIDLAND League side Coventry Sphinx pulled off a miraculous comeback to overcome Black Country Rangers in the FA Vase on Wednesday night.
Sphinx travelled to West Midlands (Regional) League side Rangers in the replay after drawing the first game 1-1 on Saturday.
And it looked like the visitors were heading for the Vase exit, Rangers netting their third of the evening with just five minutes left to play.
Rich Blythe’s 87th minute penalty looked no more than a consolation until another came on 90 minutes and Ryan Quinn completed the remarkable comeback in stoppage time to take the tie to an extra 30 minutes.
With momentum on their side, Quinn struck again in the 100th minute before Rangers hit back to make it 4-4 with penalties looming.
But they wouldn’t be needed. Blythe scored again in the second half of extra time and Travorn Thompson made the tie safe to give Sphinx an unbelievable 6-4 victory.
They will host league rivals Brocton in the Vase second round on Saturday, November 21.
