HISTORY SHINES BRIGHT ON CUP

REMEMBRANCE weekend has added poignancy this year, the 100th anniversary of the First World War Armistice.
On what is also FA Cup first round weekend, it got me looking at what happened during what was supposed to be the war to end all wars.
The competition went ahead in 1914-15 but the format was different then, eight qualifying rounds taking place before the first round proper in January, the equivalent of the third round now.
A surprisingly large number of teams took part, given the sad loss of so many men in the first year of the war.
