Luke Thomas was on the scoresheet for Derby before half time as Derby pounced on a breakdown in defence that saw Alex Babos square it into Thomas who finished neatly.
Gloucester were back level not long after the restart as they were awarded a penalty after Joe Hanks was tripped into the box. Keiran Thomas stepped up to the plate and the new captain converted expertly as he buried his spot kick into the bottom corner.
