True fans are not just Wembley glory seekers

AS I HAVE attended the vast majority of Southport’s games, both home and away, in the last 57 years, while acting as a shareholder, volunteer and sponsor of the club, I think I can reasonably claim to be a ‘fan’.
My dictionary defines fan as „a devotee or enthusiastic follower” and says the word derives from „fanatic”.
I have long since despaired of the daily newspapers’ misuse of the word, so I was less than pleased to see your editor, no less, claim that there were 16,000 Bromley ‘fans’ at Wembley last Sunday. What’s the be...
