INMATES GIVEN HOLME COMFORTS

ONE of my favourite stories concerned not the Northern League but the Teesborough League – Division Four – in which the inmates from Holme House prison in Stockton were allowed to compete on the not-too-unreasonable condition that all games must be home for Holme.
Save for the unfortunate incident of the goalkeeper sent off in handcuffs, all went well until the team – subsequently the Lags’ XI – reached the league cup final and were promptly thrown out. League rules said the final had to be on a neutral ground; Holme House were going nowhere.
