Hat-trick hero Cedwyn Scott swiped aside personal plaudits and insisted he is only focusing on Gateshead‘s bid for a return to the National League.
The Heed were in irresistible form once again on Tuesday night as Macaulay Langstaff found the net and Scott plundered a hat-trick in their 4-0 home win against Curzon Ashton.
The duo both have 24 goals to their name this season to help Mike Williamson’s side become the second highest goalscorers in the top seven levels of the football pyramid.
Only Championship title challengers Fulham have scored more goals than Gateshead this season – although remarkably, Scott’s hat-trick is their first treble of the campaign.
The former Carlisle United and Hebburn Town striker was “delighted” to finally walk away with a match ball – but stressed all focus would be on securing promotion come the end of the season.
“I had a few braces but you just have to keep going and getting in the right areas,” he told The NLP.
“We’ve been slower-paced in the second-half of games and seeing things out so there maybe haven’t been as many opportunities.
“I am delighted to get that hat-trick and it was great to see that third one going in.
“I was gutted to miss out at Gloucester because I wasn’t feeling too well that weekend so I am happy to get back on track and get going again.
“I said in pre-season I wanted 15 to 20 goals and a few people said I was brave.
“I’ve gone beyond 20 now and I’ve always been confident in my ability.
“I just want to keep winning, that’s the most important thing because we all know what the target is at the end of the season.”
The result kept the National League North leaders three points clear of second-placed Brackley Town, who were 1-0 winners in their home game against Alfreton Town thanks to a Lee Ndlovu goal.
The result was the third consecutive game the Saints have won by a single goal margin as they continue to keep applying pressure to the Heed.
Scott revealed the Gateshead players do have one eye on the results of their nearest challengers – but stressed the importance on focusing on themselves first and foremost.
“We keep coming in after games and someone says Brackley have won by one again.
“It’s become a running joke to be honest.
“We just have to focus on ourselves, take each game as it comes, cliche as it is.
“We are just fully focused on Bradford Park Avenue on Saturday and that is all that is in our minds.”
