Skipper Olley so proud of Gateshead’s National League North title win

captain Greg Olley revealed his pride after his side claimed the title on Monday afternoon.

The Heed battled their way to a 2-2 draw at in a hard-fought battle to all-but secure their return to Non-League’s top tier.

However, their promotion and title win was officially confirmed moments after the full-time whistle when news title rivals had wasted a two-goal lead in their 2-2 draw at .

The promotion rounds off a turbulent spell in Gateshead’s history after they came within 72 hours of going out of business under the club’s former ownership three years ago.

After being rescued by a supporter-led consortium and battling through the financial challenges posted by the Covid-19 pandemic, a methodical rebuild on and off the pitch has led to this season’s success.

Olley could not hide his satisfaction over seeing his side take their place back in the as he reflected on an emotional day at Victory Park.

He told The : “I think we’ve put things right today, finally.

“We would have liked to have done it in the play-offs when we first came down – but that wasn’t to be at that moment.

“I’m very proud because this is an unbelievable set of lads to work alongside.

“The fans, the coaches, the volunteers, it’s just a special club.

“We’ve all pulled together to make it happen and it’s just so special.

“It’s a pretty surreal feeling to know we are back where we started and back where I started on this journey with the club.

“Long may that journey continue.”

Mike Williamson’s side were not rated among the pre-season favourites in the National League North.

The Heed were rated at 20/1 to claim the title with the likes of and AFC viewed as many people’s tips to top the table.

Olley believes there is more to come from the Gateshead squad as they begin to prepare for life in the National League.

He said: “I think some people put us down because it’s Gateshead and they write us off.

“They’ve been proved wrong many a time before and we’ve proved them wrong with what we have done this season.

“We know what we are capable of and we have shown what we can do.

“I think our team could have competed at the level above and we know we can compete at that level.

“It’s down to us to show that next season.”
