John Akinde joins Braintree

Former winner John Akinde has signed for .

Angelo Harrop has continued the Iron’s squad overhaul with the acquisition of the forward, who was released by Colchester United in the summer.

Akinde, 35, was with Gravesend & Northfleet as a youth, winning the with them (then renamed ) in 2008.

An established career took in spells at Bristol City, Crawley Town and Portsmouth in the EFL. Following a season at in 2013/14, Akinde spent four years with , helping them earn promotion to League Two. During his time with the Bees he became their all-time EFL top scorer, overtaking Sean Devine.

Since leaving Barnet he’s turned out for Lincoln City, Gillingham and Colchester United.

Braintree Town mark their return in Step 1 after a five-year absence on 10 August with a trip to .
