CANVEY Island succumbed to a narrow defeat against Horsham at the Steve’s Taxi’s stadium.

Canvey made a bright start with Bradley Sach forcing a save out of Louis Carey in the first few minutes.

After that neither side were able to create much with the strong swirling wind making life difficult for both teams.

Eliott Ronto fired a shot through a crowd of players that Carey did well to keep out just before half time.

It took until the 71st minute for either side to create a chance in the second half and it was substitute Chris Dickson who nearly opened the scoring for the Hornets but the veteran striker saw his shot deflected inches wide of the far post.

Horsham took the lead on 74 minutes when Charlie Hester-Cook headed home a right wing corner at the far post.

Canvey pushed forward in search of an equaliser and there was drama in the final moments of injury time when they won a penalty following a scramble in the area. Conor Hubble stepped up but his spot kick was brilliantly saved by Carey diving to his left to push the ball away.

Moments later the whistle blew to seal a valuable three points for the Hornets, who sit three points outside the play-off places in ninth. Canvey sit 11th.
