Sam Ricketts will not be in the dugout for Wrexham‘s FA Cup tie with Newport County tonight amid speculation he is set to become Shrewsbury Town’s new manager.
The League One side have been without a manager since sacking John Askey earlier this month.
Ricketts became the bookies favourite to land the job after Wrexham’s impressive start in the National League, but said he was happy to stay at the Dragons.
However, the club have now announced the rookie boss won’t be in charge for their Welsh derby this evening.
A club statement read: “In view of the speculation surrounding the future of our first team manager Sam Ricketts, Wrexham AFC felt it is not appropriate for him to attend this evening’s game.
“We will seek to clarify Sam’s future as Wrexham AFC manager as soon as is possible.”
Graham Barrow, Jussi Jaaskelainen and Carl Darlington will take charge against Newport.
Towards the end of last season, manager Dean Keates left the club to join Walsall and Wrexham fell away from the play-offs.
