Barnet boss Darren Currie is being linked with the vacant manager’s job at League One Southend United.
National League Barnet are bracing themselves for a possible approach with HITC Sport reporting on Monday that Currie is in the frame to succeed Kevin Bond.
After helping the club secure survival last term, Bond resigned after a run of six defeats this season with the Shrimpers 22nd in the table and only above Bolton, who started the campaign with a 12-point deduction.
A number of names are being linked with the vacancy at Roots Hall and HITC Sport understand that Currie features prominently on Southend’s list of candidates. The Bees are currently in 10th spot in the National League, having lost only one of their opening eight fixtures under Currie’s guidance.
The 44-year-old was caretaker manager at Barnet before being named permanent boss in January. Highly regarded in coaching circles, he is said to fit the sort of profile Southend are looking for.
Currie led the Bees on an award-winning cup run last season and is pictured collecting the Acerbis Cup Run award at the 2019 National Game Awards in May for his side’s run to a fourth round replay at Championship Brentford.
Barnet dispatched Bristol Rovers and Stockport County in the opening rounds before famously beating Premier League-bound Sheffield United. A Shaquile Coulthirst penalty was enough to earn a 1-0 victory at Brammall Lane and a fourth round clash with Brentford dubbed ‘The Battle of the Bees’.
An incredible 3-3 draw at The Hive set up a mouthwatering trip to Griffin Park but it proved to be the end of the road as the Championship outfit earned a 3-1 victory.
