The 2020/21 National League season was full of drama, ups and downs, teams in and out of the play-off places, but now, the season is about to come to a close. Sutton United were crowned champions and will compete in the Football League for the very first time in their history. They won the league with 84 points, registering 25 wins along the way. It looked for a long time that the title would go to Torquay United who were leading the pack for most of the season, however, 4 draws on the bounce meant that Sutton were able to catch them and win it with a game to spare.
Now we head into the play-offs and the Quarter-Finals have already been played. Notts County and Chesterfield fought out a very entertaining match on Saturday, with Notts County coming out eventual winners, 3-2 on the day. Danny Rowe’s first half thunderbolt was not enough to secure the victory that the goal deserved.
Unbelievably, on Sunday, Hartlepool and Bromley played out another high-intensity match that finished the same as the other Quarter-Final, with Hartlepool doing enough to secure their place in the Semi-Finals. Rhys Oates scored 2 decisive goals in what turned out to be a hard-fought win even after being 3-0 up at the break.
But who is going to join Sutton United in the 2021/22 Football League campaign? There are 4 possibilities, but there will only be one winner. Let’s have a look at the teams left.

Torquay United
It will be hard to look past Torquay United as they demonstrated consistency throughout the season. They showed that they were tough to beat as they only lost 8 league games all season and won 23. It’s obvious where Torquay lost the title and that was via draws. 11 draws were vital points dropped as Sutton ran out eventual winners.
Stockport County (Winners)
Stockport looks to be the team on paper that will come out as eventual winners. The former football league club finished the season as highest scorers and they were the team to have conceded the least and they also lost the least number of games. This consistency will prove invaluable in the final couple of games. They certainly look like the team to beat, but as the old saying goes, ‘Football is not played on paper’.
Hartlepool United
Hartlepool has had a hard few seasons and things are finally starting to go their way. They have enjoyed a great season that has seen them record 22 league wins. If they are to have any chance of gaining promotion, a lot of responsibility will fall on Rhys Oates. The hitman has scored 15 league goals this season and he will need to be firing on all cylinders for Hartlepool to have a realistic chance.
Notts County
Famous for being the oldest club in the world, the Nottinghamshire based club could certainly boast being the biggest outside of the football league. They have had a good season, currently in the Semi-Final of the National League Play-Offs and they also got to the Semis in the FA Trophy. Fan power will play a massive part for the Magpies as they are a team known for inconsistencies this season. Notts County looks as though they have it all to do against stronger opposition, but on their day, they are capable of beating any team in this league.
