John Askey makes shock exit from York City

have parted company with manager John Askey.

The Minstermen made the surprise decision and, in a follow-up statement, moved to clarify the reasons behind the shock sacking

Askey, who led into the League, took over last season and guided the Minstermen back to Step 1 through the North play-offs.

The club currently sit six points outside the National League play-off places.

A club statement said: “Given John’s popularity and his incredible success last season, we understand that many fans may be upset and confused by this decision.

“However, after taking numerous factors into consideration the board are confident that it is in the best interests of the football club.

“An interim manager will be appointed from within the club’s existing staff, with a further announcement due shortly.

“We are eternally grateful to John for his efforts to help us gain promotion last season and wish him the very best of luck in his future career.”

With supporters seemingly unhappy with the move, a follow-up statement was later released claiming Askey had been unhappy in his role.
