GATESHEAD’s first sixth tier campaign for a decade got off to a goalless stalemate on home soil.
In a game of few chances, Southport had the best two but were denied by the Heed’s on-loan Boro keeper Brad James.
Both sides defended well and neither did enough to take home all three points.
An early James error in the box had to be rescued by player-manager Mike Williamson’s saving tackle. James then made a diving save to deny Dion Charles’s angled drive before Greg Olley twice threatened.
