Brackley Town have confirmed that long-serving goalkeeper Danny Lewis is retiring.
Lewis, who turned 42 today, joined from Solihull Moors in 2017 and made 320 appearances for Brackley, including an FA Trophy winners’ medal in 2018.
The former Kidderminster Harriers stopper was named in the National League North Team of the Season for 2021/22, doubled with Reusch Goalkeeper of the Year award at the 2022 National Game Awards.
In that season he kept 28 clean sheets as Brackley finished second, conceding just 23 goals.
The Saints reached the play-offs in all six full seasons with Lewis between the sticks. Last month they lost 2-1 to Boston United in the Promotion Final.
Manager Gavin Cowan paid tribute to Lewis via the club’s official website:
“I’ve been fortunate enough to play with and manage Danny during his illustrious non-league career.
“It’s extraordinary that he has been able to maintain such a high standard of performance over 20+ years that undoubtedly sees him go down of one of the best goalkeepers non-league has seen during that time.
“I know this was a difficult decision for him, but he has earned the right to now spend time with his wife and boys. I know he won’t be a stranger to us here at St James Park.”
