The Wings are flying!

By Hugo Varley,
secured their second straight victory with a dramatic last gasp winner against on Saturday, a result which lifted The Wings up to fourth place in the South table.
Last weekend’s result came off the back of a stunning 5-0 victory at previously unbeaten on Bank Holiday Monday.
We caught up with manager Steve King last week to discuss the game with Concord and his hopes for the season ahead.
“I think the result against Concord was a long time coming to be honest” said the Wings’ boss.
“We have looked good in most games this season and should have definitely won more times than we have.
“The frustrating thing is that before Monday we had created a lot chances but just couldn’t take them.
“When we played Billericay at home a few weeks ago, I felt as though we dominated the opening stages but just couldn’t put the ball in the back of the net.”
King is somewhat of a expert, having finished in first, second, third, fourth and fifth in the division, as well as reaching three play-off finals.
The former boss took the job at Lane this summer after almost pulling off the great escape with last season.
“When I spoke to the people at Welling I really got the feeling that the board wanted to do something special and push the club forwards” he remarked.
“They have got some really exciting plans for the future and there is a positive atmosphere around the place”
Although King has achieved plenty of success at this level, he is under no illusions about the difficult challenge that his side will face this year.
“We are ultimately going into the season with the aim of reaching the play-offs” he said.
“There is no doubting that there is some real quality in the division this year but in my opinion, if we can play well and take our chances then we have as good a chance as anybody.”
And with the start that Welling have made to the campaign, King looks well on course to achieve his objects this season.
