Hungerford Town manager Ian Herring is looking for a new number two after Kevin Watson left to become Garry Hill’s new first team coach at Ebbsfleet United.
Former Tottenham and Colchester star Watson, pictured, will be alongside Hill for Fleet’s televised National League trip to Harrogate Town at the weekend after both clubs confirmed the news on Wednesday.
The 45-year-old’s playing career as a midfielder also took in Swindon, Rotherham and Reading before he first moved into management as assistant manager at both Stevenage and Eastleigh, as well as enjoying a spell as Bishop’s Stortford boss.
Watson was a key figure on and off the pitch at the Berkshire club’s Bulpit Lane and Herring said: “It is with great sadness that Kevin Watson has decided to leave the club.
“He goes with my blessing and best wishes. I have the upmost respect for Watto and we will always remain close friends. I’d personally like to thank him for all his help and wish him every success at Ebbsfleet.”
Former Leyton Orient boss Hendon had been Hill’s right-hand man since he took over at Stonebridge Road in November last year.
Ebbsfleet, currently second from bottom and only above Chorley on goal difference, paid tribute to Hill in a club statement confirming his departure.
“On behalf of the manager, club and players, we would like to thank Ian for all his hard work on and off the pitch since his arrival at the club alongside Garry last November,” said the club.
With the Crusaders out of the FA Cup and not playing this weekend, Herring has more than a week to find a successor for Watson before his side’s next outing, a trip to Dorking Wanderers on Saturday week (October 12).
Herring’s side are currently rock bottom with just two wins and two draws and eight points to show from their 12 outings so far in National League South.
