A 1,706-strong crowd saw a debut brace from Ntumba Massanka give South Shields a comfortable opening-day win.
Massanka struck twice just after the break to sink Mickloever, who were already trailing to Blair Adams’s strike.
Both sides took time to settle into the game, the hosts the more dangerous with Darius Osei stinging Callum Hawkins’s palms.
The Mariners broke the deadlock shortly after the half hour as Adams found himself with space inside the box and found the far top corner.
