JOROME Slew got his Matlock career off to a dream start with a 14th-minute winner which gave the Gladiators three great points.
Whitby had won at the Proctor Cars Stadium on their last four visits, but they seldom looked like extending that sequence.
They might have had slightly more of the play, but it was Matlock who always looked the most dan gerous, with the Seasiders limited to long strikes in the extreme heat.
Slew went close inside three minutes with a header which fell wide from the potent left foot of Jordan Barnett.
