Rigg to the rescue for Reds

LANCASTER C 1

LANCASTER and Workington had to settle for a share of the points in a game played in blustery conditions at Giant Axe.

Lewis Coulton had a good chance to put Lancaster ahead after 23 minutes when he broke clear on goal but Alex Mitchell spread himself well to block the shot with his legs.

Harrison Beeden then saw an overhead kick clear the crossbar before the Dolly Blues took the lead on 34 minutes.

A corner was headed off the line by Efe Ambrose and the ball fell to Christian Sloan whose shot from outside the penalty area found its way through a crowd of players, giving the unsighted Mitchell no chance of saving.

Workington made a strong start to the second half as they looked to draw level. City keeper Aiden Dowling had to be alert to turn a header from Steve Swinglehurst over the crossbar after 52 minutes.

The Reds drew level on 72 minutes when Steven Rigg got in between the Lancaster defence and goalkeeper to receive a good cross from Jamie Allen and fire past Dowling.

Lancaster came close to restoring their lead almost immediately when Nic Evangelinos drove into the Workington penalty area and fired a shot that was well saved by Mitchell.
