BLYTH SPARTANS boss Tom Wade has admitted he is pleasantly surprised by his side’s start to the Evo-Stik Northern Premier League campaign – but believes they can keep up their good form with help from the fans.
Speaking after their 2-1 win against Ashton United – who were undefeated before their visit to Croft Park – Wade said: “We were confident we put together a decent squad this season with a mixture of young and experienced players.
“Even after a decent pre-season we are still surprised at how well the younger lads have adapted to the physical side of the game at this level.
“Importantly we have experienced and professional backroom staff as well as experienced players like Hooks, Kendrick, Purewal, Dale and Hubbard who are top draw in the changing rooms; it’s a great blend.”
Spartans sit seventh in the league after nine games and only out of the play-off places on goal difference. Wade expressed his delight at his team’s start to the season but highlighted the need for fans to be patient with the club’s young stars, who still have a lot of learning to do.
He added: “Our first half performance against Ashton was the worst we have played this season but we were still competitive. Unfortunately some supporters took it a little too far at times.
“The younger lads are not used to that but I was pleased with their attitude, putting it behind them and getting on with the game. They have earned the right to be shown patience given our good start to the campaign.”
Spartans face a challenging few weeks in the league, with visits to Witton Albion – who beat them three times last season – and title challengers Chorley before taking on newly promoted Barwell at home.
Wade believes the Green Army will play an important role in helping his young side through the next few fixtures and called on them to cheer the Spartans home.
“Our supporters are hugely important. When the lads hear the noise and the encouragement from the crowd they feel ten feet tall and you can see them puffing their chests out and their pride at wearing the shirt,” said Wade.
“The vast majority of the supporters are brilliant and are loyal to the end. The future is bright and we need to work together as a club to bring this team on.”
