■ MATT SARGENT’S 51st-minute thunderbolt sent Widnes to victory over Mossley.
The best chance of a first half which lacked any real quality fell to Widnes’ Kyle Sambor, but Liam Lovell made a terrific diving save down to his right.
And the second half was only six minutes old when Salford City loanee Sargent rifled, what proved to be the winner, into the top corner from 25 yards.
Mossley had the ball in the net late on through Danny McLaughlin, but Widnes keeper Cameron Terry was judged to have been fouled in the build-up.
