DOM McGiveron converted an 86th-minute penalty to grab a point for Widnes.
It had long looked as though Avro were going to condemn their hosts to a first home league defeat of the season after Sam Davidson’s opener direct from a corner.
The visitors were the better side in the first half, but never tested Mark Halstead as much as they wouldd have liked.
Widnes rallied late in the half with skipper Ste Irwin forcing a good save from Grant Shenton while James Steele put a header wide that he should have done better with.
