JJ O’DONNELL, currently rehabilitating after career-saving surgery, is to return to Gateshead as kit manager while he is on the sidelines.
O’Donnell, 24, spent 18 months as a player for the Heed but his last appearance came in December 2014 after he suffered from a condition known as sesamoiditis, which affects the small bones underneath the big toe.
The winger had a career-saving operation last June and is continuing his rehab as he seeks a long awaited return to the pitch.
He has been handed a return to his former club and will serve as the first team kit and equipment manager, taking care of players’ requirements throughout the week and on matchday at the International Stadium.
In addition, he will also take on a key role in the club’s fledgling community programme, beginning with the ‘Silver Soccer‘ walking football scheme.
O’Donnell said: “I’m delighted to start a new role at Gateshead as the kit man and overseeing the new walking football scheme the club have set up.
“It’s brilliant and thoughtful of the club to ask me to fulfil the roles alongside my continued rehabilitation. I’m very thankful to everyone at Gateshead for the opportunity.
“My main aim is still 100 per cent to continue my playing career and the new roles won’t affect my rehab in the slightest.
“I’m looking forward to doing something I’ve never done before and to be back in a football changing room is something I’ve missed nearly as much as playing.”
