KIDDERMINSTER HARRIERS chief executive Colin Gordon says the club can’t afford to work with the finances ex-boss Steve Burr had at his disposal when he was at Aggborough.
Burr was sacked as Chester boss last week after a run of one win in ten games left them in the National League relegation battle.
Burr’s exit from the Deva Stadium left some predicting a return to Kidderminster but he would likely have to take a step down with the club set to be playing National League North football next term.
And he would also have to work with a budget fives time less than what he had during his previous tenure at the club.
Kiddy only lost out on the Conference title on the final day of the 2012-13 season before they were defeated in the play-offs. He was sacked in January 2014 just months after turning down the Forest Green Rovers job.
The former Nuneaton, Hucknall, Northwich Victoria and Stalybridge Celtic boss will no doubt interest some clubs but Gordon says Kidderminster couldn’t afford him.
“When Steve was here we had a completely different budget – five times what we’ve got now,” said Gordon, who is serving as Harriers’ interim manager. “It’s easy to go back in time and remember when things were really sweet and smelling nicely
“I like Steve. He’s a great guy. I love the fact that he wants to play open football. But we are past the time when we had the wage bill to attract top players who can affect results.
“The fact of the matter is that what we need now is a different type. We know where we want to go and how we want to take things forward. We’re not going backwards. We know what we want to do and people have got to trust us.”
