DANNY COWLEY has resigned as manager of Braintree Town and is expected to be unveiled as league rivals Lincoln City’s new manager later today.
The 36-year-old, who joined Braintree last summer from Concord Rangers, led the Iron to third in his first season in charge before they were beaten in the National League play-offs by Grimsby Town.
The PE teacher earned plenty of admirers following a brilliant season at Cressing Road and it was revealed on Monday that Lincoln had made an approach.
The Imps are searching for a new boss after Chris Moyses stepped down at the end of the season. New director Clive Nates pumped a six-figure sum into the Sincil Bank club and they want a manager with National League experience.
And it seems as if they’ve got their man. Lincoln have confimed their new boss will be unveiled at the club’s fans’ forum tonight and Cowley – alongside brother and assistant Nicky – resigned from their Braintree posts on Thursday evening with speculation mounting.
Iron chairman Lee Harding told BBC Essex: “Being fair to Danny and Nick, if they think this is the right opportunity for them going forward, we understand and support it.
“This is not about what they’re doing as their hobby, this will be their full-time job and if they decide the package they’re being offered is worthwhile giving up what they do in their day job then it’s a big step for them and I hope they get it right.
“With the news that broke earlier in the week, we’ve already had people calling asking us to think of them which is nice. We will advertise the post and I would imagine we’ll have a lot of applications.”
