LINCOLN CITY’s Matt Rhead could be set for the Sincil Bank exit after the club accepted a transfer request from the experienced striker.
The 32-year-old enjoyed a fruitful campaign last season, netting 23 times in the National League to become the Imps’ top scorer.
He attracted interest from Barrow – managed by Rhead’s boss at Mansfield Town, Paul Cox – in January but the Bluebirds had a bid rejected.
The offer for the striker was dismissed out of hand by the Imps with then-manager Chris Moyses claiming the bid “might have bought his left leg”.
Despite Lincoln having a new boss following Danny Cowley’s move from league rivals Braintree Town, Rhead has expressed his interest in leaving Sincil Bank.
The Imps have accepted a transfer request from the big striker but Cowley says any suitors “will have to pay for him”.
The City boss told the Lincolnshire Echo: “We have accepted a request from Matt Rhead to go on the transfer list. We know it’s not personal, it’s just football.
“Regardless of what they have done for the club in the past, if they are not happy they will never play to their best, so we have accepted his request.
“He is a unique player. There aren’t many target men who can score more than 20 goals a season.
“For us to replace him it will obviously cost us a lot of money, so for any club that does want to sign him we will expect to be remunerated. The club in question will have to pay for Matt if they want him.”
