BOREHAM WOOD have further strengthened their squad with the addition of another player from last season’s surprise package Braintree Town – Matt Paine.
The Wood signed former Iron captain Kenny Davis shortly after last season had ended and have now brought in defender Paine, who can also play in midfield.
He spent six years with Braintree and made over 180 appearances in Non-League‘s top flight before deciding it was time for a change following manager Danny Cowley’s departure to Lincoln City.
Paine, alongside Davis, was a key part of the Iron side last season that finished third before narrowly losing out to Grimsby Town in the play-off semi-finals.
The long-serving Braintree man will be fondly remembered for his David Beckham-esque wonder goal from the halfway line against Kidderminster back in March.
Boreham Wood boss Luke Garrard told the club’s website: “I’m delighted to have secured Matt’s signature and his experience, ability and versatility will serve us well.
“It’s a signature that I’ve targeted since the season came to an end and I’m again very grateful to our chairman (Danny Hunter) for backing me on this.
“Though we did have a talented squad last season, I always felt we needed one or two additional leaders to help get us over the line in certain games.
“In Painey, Kenny Davis, who we signed a few weeks ago and with the likes of Joe Devera, Dave Stephens, Danny Woodards, Ben Nunn and Conor Clifford, that problem will now solve itself.”
