DOVER ATHLETIC‘S star midfielder Nicky Deverdics has earned a move into the Football League with Hartlepool United.
The 28-year-old was instrumental in the Whites’ fifth-place finish, scoring 14 times and clocking up 18 assists for Chris Kinnear’s side.
He was on the shortlist for the Sport Shield Player of the Year at our National Game Awards in association with SCL and his performances attracted interest from the Football League.
And following the expiration of his Dover contract, he has opted to return to his native north east with Hartlepool, who finished 16th in League Two last season.
After starting his career at hometown side Newcastle United, Deverdics enjoyed spells with Gateshead and Bedlington Terriers before his big move to Scottish side Gretna.
He helped the club from Division Three up to the Scottish Premier League before he moved back down south, spending two years at Barnet.
Time at Icelandic club BI/Bolungravik and TB Tvoroyri of the Faroe Islands followed and Deverdics then returned to these shores with Tadcaster Albion and then Dover in July 2014 following a successful trial.
“Every time we’ve seen him play he’s been excellent and so have all the reports we have had on him,” Pools boss Craig Hignett said.
“He’s the best player in the National League in a lot of people’s eyes; he’s got a great left foot, is very creative and he can make goals as well as score them.
“There were a few clubs in for him but we met him very early and tried to sell the club to him and we managed to convince him that this is the place for him.
“Nicky is very ambitious and he wants to join a club who are pushing and hopefully we can give him that platform here.”
