VETERAN midfielder Danny Whitaker has signed a new deal with Macclesfield Town while boss John Askey has named Andy Halls as the club’s new captain.
Whitaker, 35, is in his second spell at the Moss Rose and has now made over 300 appearances for the club, scoring over 50 times.
He played 45 times for Askey’s men in the National League last term, contributing seven goals as a key part of the Silkmen’s midfield.
The ex-Port Vale, Oldham and Chesterfield man is now nearing his ninth season in a Macclesfield shirt after signing a new one-year deal.
Meanwhile, defender Halls has been selected as the man to replace Paul Turnbull as Macc’s captain, following the midfielder’s move to league rivals Barrow.
Askey is hoping giving Halls, 24, the captain’s armband will help the former Stockport County youngster develop.
He said: “We could have easily given the captain to one of our experienced players like George Pilkington or John McCombe.
“But we felt it would be better giving it to a younger player to give them some responsibility. Hopefully Andy will develop as a player and improve as a result of this responsibility. That is not to say that other players cannot be leaders on the pitch.”
