Festive period goal bonanzas were ‘absolute madness’ says Torquay skipper

skipper Courtney Richards says the two games against over the festive period were “absolute madness”.

The Gulls recovered from throwing away a three-goal lead on Boxing Day to win 4-3 thanks to Ben Gerring’s late winner at Plainmoor.

There was plenty more drama to come on New Year’s Day, however, as Torquay travelled to The New Lawn for the return fixture.

‘s men once again gave away a lead, this time a two-goal cushion, and a controversial own goal from keeper Brendan Moore with two minutes to go left the final scoreline reading 5-5.

Despite leading 5-3 with seven minutes to go, the Gulls couldn’t quite hang on but will be boosted by four points taken off a promotion chasing side.

Those results leave Torquay 17th in the table and six points clear of fourth-bottom side .

After the ten-goal thriller, Courtney told BBC Radio Devon: “The last two games have been absolute madness.

“How can we score five goals away and not win the game? It’s beyond me, but if someone had said we’d get a point before kick-off we’d have taken it.

“It’s easy for us to turn it on against the bigger teams as we have nothing to lose.

“It’s important that we move forward and be consistent in dealing with the teams in and around us so that we can start creating some gaps and not get sucked into a fight we don’t want to be in.”
