Southport sack boss Steve Burr after “disappointing series of results”

are searching for their tenth permanent manager since April 2013 after sacking boss Steve Burr “following a disappointing series of results”.

The 56-year-old, who has also managed Nuneaton, , , , Kidderminster and , replaced Andy Bishop at Haig Avenue in September.

The Sandgrounders were second bottom of the National League when Burr took the reins but, despite lifting them out of the relegation places, he has been relieved of his duties.

Port lost 3-1 at on Saturday and that result followed two disappointing home defeats to North Ferriby in the National League and Step 2 club in the .

The Sandgrounders now sit one place and one point above the bottom four but the club felt that recent results and performances didn’t “provide the security as required”.

Former Southport boss Liam Watson returned to the club as a director just before Burr’s appointment and he will step back into the dugout in the interim with the club facing a difficult trip to on Saturday.

A club statement read: “Following a disappointing series of results the board have taken the above decision in the best interests of Southport Club to move forward in a different direction.

“With 19 players recruited during Steve Burr’s tenure and significant financial backing to strengthen the squad the performances and results recently have not shown signs that confirm the club can get to a position in the league that provides the security as required.

“Director of football Liam Watson will take interim charge of the squad as for the forthcoming fixtures with the aim of ensuring the club retains its National League status, Keith Briggs will continue as assistant manager.

“The board would like to wish Steve good luck in the future and thank him for his work and efforts whilst at Southport Football Club.”
