SUTTON UNITED have signed Conference promotion winner Will Puddy on loan after their number one Ross Worner went down with injury.
Worner was taken off just 16 minutes into Saturday’s game at Torquay United and with no substitute goalkeeper on the bench after Wayne Shaw’s resignation following the pie eating incident against Arsenal, defender Simon Downer was handed the gloves.
Downer did remarkably well between the sticks, conceding just once as the U’s came back to win 3-2 and pick up a vital three points.
While the extent of Worner’s leg injury has not been disclosed, U’s boss Paul Doswell has moved to give himself another goalkeeping option by bringing in Puddy from League One side Bristol Rovers.
The former Salisbury stopper signed for Rovers at the start of the 2014-15 season and was in goal as the club earned an instant return to the Football League by beating Grimsby Town in the promotion final at Wembley.
Doswell has also signed former Aldershot and Barnet winger Kieron Cadogan, who will go into the U’s squad once international clearance has been received.
Cadogan, 26, has recently been playing for GAIS in Sweden’s second tier and returns to England after three years in Scandinavia.
Doswell told the club’s website: “I initially tried to sign Kieron two years ago and when Jamie Lawrence told me he was returning to England I was delighted to have the chance again.
“With pace and good technical ability, he’s a wide player who will create opportunities, and is also a goal threat himself.”
