TONY GILBERT has ended his 38-year working association with Conference Premier club Newport County.
Gilbert has held numerous roles at the Welsh club, including groundsman, physiotherapist and caretaker manager.
Most recently he has been acting as the club’s kit man but he says their move to full-time and his age have led him to call it a day.
Speaking to the club’s website, he said: “I’m 63 and the job is getting harder to be honest.
“Since the club has gone full-time people don’t understand the work involved behind the scenes and I’m not getting any younger, I have had some great times over the years and have some amazing memories.
“County is in my blood and it will be nice to watch the games from a different angle and support the club from the terraces.
“All I can do is wish the club the very best and hope they return to the Football League.”
Gilbert will now become a life member at Rodney Parade and a pre-season benefit match will be played in his honour this summer.
