Wrexham and Notts County have closely battled with each other at the top of the National League standings ever since the season got underway in August. The title race is incredibly difficult to pick and either side could narrowly secure the trophy in May.
Unprecedented points totals?
With the season reaching the latter stages, both teams have already exceeded 80 points and are well on course to break the 100 points mark. The all-time record stands at 105 points recorded by Crawley Town in the 2010/11 season, and whoever comes out on top in the title race could certainly set a new record. Wrexham is the frontrunner for the title currently and they have enjoyed an excellent season overall. The club made an impressive run to the FA Cup fourth round where they were narrowly beaten in a replay against Sheffield United. In a bet on football, Manchester City are the favourites to win the competition at 6/4 but the fact Wrexham made a significant run in a competition containing top teams is indicative of the progress they have made. Both Wrexham and their title rivals Notts County have had remarkable seasons and are certainly capable of playing at a higher level but unfortunately one will have to settle for a playoff spot.

Top goalscorer in an individual season
The record goalscoring haul in an individual season in the National League stands at 40 which was set by Ricky Miller in 2016/17 while playing for Dover Athletic. Wrexham and Notts County both have star forwards that are spearheading their title charges and could potentially break the goalscoring record.
County’s Macauley Langstaff was the leading goalscorer after 35 games played having found the net 32 times. Langstaff joined the club from Gateshead in the summer window and his goalscoring exploits have helped his new side become one of the most impressive teams the league has ever seen. If he remains fit and continues to score at the rate he has so far this season Langstaff will set a new goalscoring record. He has averaged 0.91 goals per game played for County meaning he tends to score in almost every single fixture.

Paul Mullin has also been prolific in the league this season for Wrexham, his form has even earned him praise from Liverpool legend Ian Rush. He had managed 27 goals after 33 appearances with his scoring rate not being quite as remarkable as Langstaff’s. Mullin would require an increase in his scoring rate if he was to break the record, however, his form has been excellent in 2023. The scouser seems to be hitting his strongest form at the business end of the season.
Wrexham and Notts County are both spectacular teams and could arguably play at a couple of levels higher than the National League. They have showcased their dominance on the rest of the league with their personal battle at the top of the table this season. Many records could be broken both by the teams and by incredible individuals. Regardless of how the remainder of the season pans out, the two sides will go down as some of the greatest in the history of the National League.
