Rye United Withdraw From Sussex County League

SUSSEX COUNTY LEAGUE side Rye United have withdrawn from the league with immediate effect and released all of their players after an extraordinary general meeting last night.

At the EGM members voted 16-2 with a number of abstentions to withdraw from the Step 5 league and let their players leave.

The Quarterboys, who reached the quarter-finals of the in 2010-11, were fourth bottom of the table and chairman Clive Taylor last week warned: “Anybody that’s got the slightest interest in Rye United surviving should attend the meeting. The club is under serious threat of closure.”

Chief Taylor began the meeting by saying the club faced financial difficulties and that he was unwilling to continue in the role he has held for nine years. With no solution forthcoming, the vote confirmed the club’s exit.

Their trip to tomorrow has been postponed, along with the rest of their scheduled fixtures, although their Under-18 team intends to finish their two remaining games in the Crowborough & District Junior League.
