BACUP BOROUGH boss Brent Peters refused to make excuses after his side came bearing gifts in their 3-0 defeat at Cheadle Town on Saturday.
Borough, now ninth in the table, were playing just their third North West Counties League Division One game since October 31 and they were punished for their slow start.
Cheadle were three ahead after just 20 minutes and Peters’ charges were unable to get back into the game, leaving the boss to curse his side’s charitable defending.
“First of all I must compliment the Cheadle management and coaches, they no doubt picked up on the fact that for several weeks we have not played,” he said.
“To be fair it was unbelievable the way they did set off in the game, before we knew it we were two goals down.
“I could start by bemoaning that some of my lads had been feeling unwell all week and unable to train. Whilst this is fact, I refuse to use any excuse because their three goals were shocking from our defensive point of view.
“When a team usually concede it comes from a mistake, their goals were no exception but when one player makes a mistake as a team you expect a team-mate to cover that player’s deficiency.
“Goal two resulted from a usual run of the mill take for our keeper resulting in him handing out a Christmas gift by dropping the ball at the feet of a striker for another tap in and number three was similar to their opening goal with yet another tap in.
“There is no doubt about it this result is a setback, but there are plenty of games to go. We have an abundance of quality in the club, so to this end I am confident this will be a rare setback.”
