STEP 6 club Hillingdon Borough have been saved from closure after former player and current Everton winger Yannick Bolasie stepped in to help.
Boro announced yesterday afternoon that they had resigned from the Spartan South Midlands League Division One, despite sitting comfortably mid-table.
The club, based in Ruislip and reformed in 1990, said on Twitter: “I can confirm that Hillingdon Borough have pulled out of the division with immediate effect. Local clubs can fill your boots.
“A sad, sad day to see a historic club pull out of football. But when your hands are tied and your being treated this way, it’s all we can do.”
However, the club posted again just hours later saying that Saturday’s home game against Baldock Town was back on after a helping hand from Bolasie.
The 27-year-old DR Congo winger started his career with Rushden & Diamonds and then played for Hillingdon Borough in 2006-07 before shooting to fame with Plymouth, Bristol City, Crystal Palace and Everton.
Bolasie, who used to receive a free burger as a goal bonus when playing for Hillingdon, obviously hadn’t forgotten his footballing roots and contacted the club after hearing about their plight.
Boro said: “Yannick Bolasie has been in touch and I can confirm that Saturday’s fixture is back on home v Baldock Town.
“Thanks to everyone for your support in a tough day. And huge thanks to Yannick Bolasie for helping this historic club.”
