captain Angus MacDonald has signed a new deal with the Gulls but boss has warned he doesn’t expect the young defender to be around for too much longer.

The 23-year-old centre-back made 41 appearances for Torquay last season, spending most of the campaign as skipper following Nicholson’s arrival.

He was a key part of the team that clawed their way out of the relegation zone and secured their status in ‘s top flight.

There were fears his impressive performances at Plainmoor had attracted the interest of other clubs but despite his contract running out at the end of last season, MacDonald will be staying with the Gulls.

Player-boss Nicholson is delighted with the news but says the former Reading and City defender’s long-term future lies in the League.

“He understands that staying at the club is the best way he is going to develop,” Nicholson told the club’s website.

“He is an outstanding defender at this level, and we’ll struggle to keep him moving forward as he has the ability to play two or three leagues above this one.

“It is up to us to match his talent by fighting for promotion and he is going to be a key figure for us.”
