DEFENDER Simon Downer earned a spot in our Team of the Day in an unfamiliar position after he had to go in goal for the majority of Sutton United’s win over Torquay.
Number one Ross Worner injured his leg in the 16th minute and with the U’s having no substitute keeper after the infamous #Piegate incident, Downer was handed the gloves. The defender did remarkably well, conceding just once as the U’s came away from Torquay with a vital 3-2 win.
Roarie Deacon scored one of Sutton’s goals and he was included in our midfield four alongside Wrexham‘s Russ Penn, Jim Kellermann of Aldershot and Lincoln’s Joe Ward.
National League top scorer Ricky Miller added another three goals to his tally as Dover brushed Eastleigh aside and Miller was joined up front by Tranmere’s FA Trophy hat-trick hero Cole Stockton and North Ferriby scorer Reece Thompson.
Thompson scored the Villagers’ equaliser at relegation rivals Guiseley before Ferriby scored a late winner to pick up a huge three points – which is why manager Steve Housham was named our Top Boss.
York City made it through to the semi-finals of the Trophy with victory over Brackley and Danny Parslow earned a spot in our back three alongside Dover’s Bondz N’Gala and Sam Hughes of Chester.
