Ex-Aston Villa midfielder Stiliyan Petrov could return to football with Nuneaton Town

FORMER Aston Villa and Celtic midfielder Stiliyan Petrov could make a return to after being offered a role at Nuneaton Town.

The 37-year-old, who made 105 appearances for Bulgaria, was forced to retire in 2013 after being diagnosed with leukaemia.

Petrov played Sunday League football for Wychall Wanderers during the 2014-15 season, helping them to win the Central Warwickshire Over-35s Premier Division One Cup.

After recovering from cancer following four months of chemotherapy, Petrov attempted a professional comeback in the summer, playing for former club Villa in pre-season but no deal was forthcoming.

However, he could be set for a return to the game he loves with Nuneaton boss Kevin Wilson confirming the club have made the Bulgarian an offer to join the coaching staff at Liberty Way.

Petrov could also turn out for the side, currently 13th in the table, and Wilson told BBC Coventry & Warwickshire: “We’re trying to give him the opportunity to get the coaching hours in and get the experience.

“People say he’s been in the professional game, but everybody has to learn and take the process that comes. We’ll wait and see how it goes, but it’s exciting for a football club like ours.”
