Dennis Greene departs Boston United by ‘mutual consent’ after lack of progress

chairman David Newton says manager Dennis Greene’s three-and-a-half year tenure was brought to an end as the club had not made enough progress.

The former and St Neots boss took charge of the Pilgrims in March 2013 and twice led them to the North play-offs.

They were 2-0 up after the semi-final first leg against last season but a 3-0 defeat in the return fixture consigned them to another season of Step 2 .

And it has been a difficult campaign so far for the Lincolnshire outfit with the Pilgrims sitting four points above the relegation zone.

Saturday’s tie at was abandoned at half-time due to fog with Boston 1-0 down and Greene’s last league game in charge last Saturday ended in a heavy 9-2 defeat at .

Despite the club’s tough run, chairman Newton says it was not an easy decision to make as both parties agreed to part by “mutual consent”.

“It’s not all about results, it’s about progression, and I don’t think we were progressing the way we had hoped, and Dennis agrees with that,” Newton said.

“We both want the best for the club. It was a big decision after three really good seasons, but these things have to be done sometimes.

“The fans don’t know all the facts. They don’t see what happens day to day, and how he was trying to turn things around.

“In business you have to give people time to sort things out. We did that with Dennis. A few fans may have wanted him to leave but a lot were still behind Dennis. We were. It’s very hard to make this decision.”

A club statement added: “Boston United have parted company with manager Dennis Greene by mutual consent.

“Greene, who assumed control of first team affairs in March 2013, oversaw three hugely successful full campaigns at the United helm, culminating in missing out on the play-offs on the final day of the first season and reaching the top five in the subsequent two years.

“The club would like to sincerely thank Dennis for his excellent service at the Jakemans Stadium and wish him all the very best for the future.

“Martyn Bunce will take interim control of the first team for Tuesday evening’s fixture at Witton Albion.”
