HIGHLY-RATED young defender Alex Penny has become the latest star to join Peterborough United.

Posh had already signed Dover striker Ricky Miller and Stockport winger Danny Lloyd and made Penny their third Non-League recruit of the summer on Wednesday.

The 20-year-old impressed in the North for Boro last season and was involved in Jamie Vardy’s V9 Academy last month.

Penny recently spent time on trial with Premier League side West Brom but it’s League One outfit Peterborough who have secured his signature on a three-year deal.

Nuneaton have received a club record fee for Penny’s services and are set to receive even more should the defender progress through the Posh ranks.

The youngster told Nuneaton’s website: “I am so grateful for the belief and confidence that has been placed in me by the gaffer (Tommy Wright) and staff here.

“I know that I am leaving the club in a very strong position and I am confident that they can go on to have a good season.

“There are so many special people here and I would like to say a big thank you to all of the supporters and staff and wish them all of the best for the future.

“I’m appreciative of everything that the club has done for me and I am over the moon with the opportunity that now stands before me.”

While sad to see one of his star players go, Wright says he was resigned to losing the impressive youngster with all the attention he was attracting.

“Alex is a quality footballer,” Wright said. “He ticks all of the boxes when it comes to the modern day player; he’s quick, athletic and someone who has much to give.

“You can see why so many clubs from higher levels were looking at him and we knew as soon as he got the call-up to the V9 Academy that it would be tough to keep him – we knew then that people would get to see what he was about.

“I am delighted for him that he has now got this move and I can see him making an immediate impact there.”

And Wright is still confident of a successful season at Liberty Way following a number of eye-catching signings this summer.

“I think we have a solid squad this season and one with a lot of options all over the pitch,” he added. “I am pleased with how we are shaping up at this stage.”
